The new operating system, called Windows 7, is being built upon the current one, Windows Vista, which has been scorned by many for its features, including its achingly slow performance and incompatibilities with existing software and hardware. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.) It’s not clear yet whether Windows 7 will mean an improvement in those areas. Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and CEO Steve Ballmer, both at The Wall Street Journal’s “D: All Things Digital” conference, where a preview of the new OS was shown, didn’t address those issues.

It was hard to watch “Indiana Jones and the Legend of the Crystal Skull” and not feel like you wanted to press the A button at some point. The movie screamed “video game.” Entertainment does not exist in a vacuum but in a cyclone. It’s a giant mixing pot, borrowing something from its presence in other mediums, even subconsciously so.

Luxury retailer Christian Dior has pulled advertisements featuring Sharon Stone from stores across China after the actress suggested the country’s earthquake was “bad karma” for Beijing’s policies in Tibet. At least 68,000 people died in the May 12 quake in southwest China, which came months after unrest in Tibet that sparked an international outcry over Beijing’s handling of the predominantly Buddhist region, which Communist troops entered in 1950.

Operator dies as trolley hits another in Newton; At least 7 hospitalized for serious injuries; Rail service disrupted, replaced with shuttles. An outbound Green Line trolley crowded with rush-hour passengers slammed into the back of another trolley along an idyllic stretch of track in Newton yesterday evening, a collision that caused the two trains to derail, threw commuters from their seats, and killed the MBTA operator who was driving the second train.
