Scientists for the Phoenix Mars Lander are wrestling with an intermittent short circuit on the spacecraft. The problem is in a device that will analyze ice and soil dug from the planet’s surface, the scientists said Friday. The short circuit was found during testing done before the mission’s experiments get under way.

Microsoft Corp CEO Steve Ballmer said that the company would consider extending the shelf life of Windows XP if that is what their customers want. Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer said that the company really does listen to its customers and that is those customers want to extend the shelf life of its Windows XP operating system, then Microsoft will consider that extension. But Ballmer is still adamant that most people who buy new PCs today prefer to have Vista on them rather than its predecessor Windows XP.

Aerial photographs of an isolated community of indigenous people in the Amazon basin, near the border shared by Brazil and Peru, were released this week to show that they exist but may be endangered by illegal logging. One picture, taken by the Brazilian government, showed two men, painted red, brandishing bows and arrows at the camera-bearing plane flying low over the dense rain forest. In another picture, about 15 men, women and children who were not painted looked up from thatched huts.

Organizers of an effort to get UFO reports taken more seriously teased journalists on Friday with glimpses at dark, grainy video showing what appeared to be a face peeping up from a window. The video was played at a downtown Denver news conference, after days of buildup from a Denver resident who is circulating a petition calling on the city to create an “Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission” to deal with reports of alien encounters. The petition drive’s organizer, Jeff Peckman, hopes to get 4,000 signatures to place his initiative on the ballot.
