Batman sequel “The Dark Knight” smashed yet another Hollywood record as it cleared the $400 million domestic box office mark in 18 days, less than half the time it took “Shrek 2″ to reach that milestone, Warner Bros. Pictures said on Tuesday. After a third straight weekend at No. 1 in U.S. and Canadian theaters — grossing $42.7 million Friday through Sunday — “Dark Knight” amassed $6.3 million on Monday to bring its domestic tally to $400.03 million, the Time Warner Inc.-owned movie distributor reported.

Scientist Bruce Ivins “was the only person responsible” for anthrax attacks in 2001 that killed five and shook the nation, the Justice Department said, backing the claim with dozens of documents pointing to his guilt, paranoia and homicidal intentions. Ivins is likely not the Amerithrax bioterrorist because: One, he probably didn’t have the technical ability to make military grade. Bruce Ivins went to work each day in a high-security federal laboratory where he handled some of the world’s most deadly substances. But more than a year before the 2001 anthrax attacks, the scientist admitted to himself that he was losing his grasp on reality.

Sliding software prices have damped the halo effect many music and software companies expected from selling their products through Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone software store. Take, for example, game maker Jirbo Inc. The Los Angeles-based company thought it would have trouble getting customers to buy an iPhone version of its popular “Break” video game, which it had wanted to launch for $2.99 on July 10. That’s because it would be crowded in with 1,400 other titles, like “Super Monkey Ball” and “iPhoneHome,” some of which sell for as little as 99 cents.

A privately held rocket company on Wednesday blamed a design error for its latest failure to reach orbit, which caused the loss of three government satellites and human ashes, including the remains of astronaut Gordon Cooper and “Star Trek” actor James Doohan. The two-stage Falcon 1 rocket, which blasted off from a Central Pacific atoll Saturday night, separated as planned on its way to space, but leftover thrust after engine cutoff caused the first stage to fall back and hit the second stage, according to Hawthorne-based SpaceX.
