The WBC lightweight title belt looked perfectly natural hanging off Manny Pacquiao’s shoulder after he battered David Diaz. That invisible crown on his head seemed like a perfect fit as well. From the first too-quick combination to the decisive left cross to the jaw, Pacquiao’s ninth-round TKO victory at the Mandalay Bay Events Center also seemed to be a coronation. Most observers left the fight convinced the Filipino star deserves the unofficial honour of being known as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, even if Pacquiao himself still doesn’t care about that particular title.

The Trojans didn’t even make the postseason this year in baseball, but they did experience some movement in the record books. This year’s title was won by Fresno State, being called by many the biggest underdog to win an NCAA championship — in any sport. The Bulldogs scored 62 runs over the course of the College World Series, tying USC’s record from exactly a decade ago. Until yesterday, the Trojans were also tied for second most runs in a CWS with 54 in 1995.

Just when you thought the war of words between Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant had finally been laid to rest, the battle now appears to be back on. In a video released on TMZ.com, O’Neal is shown doing a freestyle rap in a New York City nightclub in which he takes several shots at his former Lakers teammate. “Kobe (expletive), tell me how my a** tastes,” went the chorus, which O’Neal repeatedly encouraged the crowd to sing along with him.

Tiger Woods will no longer have to look over his shoulder after revealing that he’ll have season-ending surgery. Phil Mickelson and a handful of the Tour’s other star players will have the rest of the season to steal the spotlight. Tiger Woods’ misery might become another player’s pleasure as the PGA Tour plays out the season without the world’s No. 1 golfer. Woods will be absent while recovering from knee surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament, which means No. 2 Phil Mickelson and a mixture of players will have the rest of the season to themselves.
