Nintendo Co. on Thurs. said that the Wii video game console held total sales of 9.5 million units in the U.S. to date. The hardware, which sold 714,000 units in Apr., will likely meet or beat Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 total U.S. unit sales of 10 million in the next two months.

Microsoft touted this week that the Xbox 360 was the first next-generation video game hardware to reach the 10 million unit in sales.

However, the win is predicted to be short-lived as the Wii continues to outsell the Xbox 360 and Sony Corp.’s Playstation 3 in droves nationwide.

Wii, released in Nov. 2006, has held mass market appeal on low barrier-to-entry titles like Wii Sports, Wii Play, and Mario Kart Wii.

Next week, it will sell the new $89.99 title Wii Fit, which will allow users to perform more than 40 exercises on the included Wii Balance Board peripheral.
